How to Care for an Organic Mattress (So It Lasts)

A well-made organic mattress is built to last 20 years. Whether it actually does depends partly on the materials and construction, and partly on how you look after it.

The good news is that caring for an organic mattress isn’t complicated. A few simple habits, done consistently, make a real difference over time.

Use a Mattress Protector From Day One

This is the single most important thing you can do. Natural materials like organic latex, wool, and cotton are durable — but they’re not impervious to moisture. Spills, sweat, and humidity can work their way into the layers over time, affecting both the feel and the longevity of your mattress. A good protector creates a barrier between your mattress and the world without trapping heat or adding anything synthetic to your sleep surface.

Our Organic Cotton Protector is waterproof and breathable, made without synthetic coatings or chemical treatments. It fits over the mattress without bunching, washes easily, and does its job quietly in the background. Put it on before you sleep on the mattress for the first time and wash it regularly — every few weeks alongside your sheets is a good rhythm.

Rotate It Regularly

Rotating your mattress (head to foot, not flipped) distributes wear evenly across the surface and prevents the same areas from being compressed night after night. For a new mattress, rotating every three months for the first year is a good starting point. After that, twice a year is generally enough.

Our mattresses are not designed to be flipped (the comfort layers are built for one orientation) but regular rotation goes a long way toward preserving the feel and support over the long term.

Let It Breathe

Organic latex and natural fibers are naturally breathable, but they still benefit from occasional airflow. When you change your sheets, let the mattress sit uncovered for an hour or so. If you can open a window and let some fresh air through, even better. This helps dissipate any accumulated moisture and keeps the sleep surface feeling fresh.

If you ever notice any mustiness — rare with organic materials, but possible in very humid climates — airing the mattress out in a well-ventilated room for a few hours usually resolves it.

Clean Spills Quickly and Gently

If something gets through the protector, act fast. Blot — don’t rub! — with a clean cloth to absorb as much liquid as possible. A small amount of mild, fragrance-free soap diluted in water works well for spot cleaning. Avoid soaking the mattress, and let it dry completely before putting any bedding back on.

Harsh chemical cleaners, enzyme-based sprays, and steam cleaners are all worth avoiding on an organic mattress. They can break down the natural fibers and latex over time.

Support It Well

An organic mattress performs best on a solid, supportive foundation. Slatted bed frames work well as long as the slats are no more than three inches apart. Wider gaps can cause the mattress to sag unevenly over time. Check your foundation periodically to make sure nothing has shifted or weakened or broken.

The Simple Version

Protect it, rotate it, let it breathe, clean gently. That’s really it. Twenty years is a long time, but with the right materials and a little attention, it’s genuinely achievable.
