In a world where every mattress brand seems to throw around words like “natural,” “green,” and “eco-friendly,” how do you actually know if a mattress is truly organic? The answer lies in the certifications, not the marketing.
If you’re shopping for a mattress that’s healthier for you, your family, and the planet, here’s what you need to look for (and what the certifications really mean).
First: “Organic” Is Not a Regulated Term in the Mattress Industry
Surprised? You’re not alone. Just because a mattress is labeled “organic” doesn’t mean it’s made entirely—or even mostly—of organic materials. Without third-party certifications of the materials and finished product, there’s no guarantee the mattress is free from synthetic foams, chemical flame retardants, or off-gassing adhesives.
That’s where these certifications come in.
1. GOTS – Global Organic Textile Standard
If your mattress contains organic cotton or wool, GOTS is the gold standard for verifying its authenticity.
What it means:
- The material is at least 95% certified organic
- It’s processed without toxic bleaches, dyes, or chemical finishes
- Social and environmental responsibility is enforced throughout the supply chain
Why it matters: You’re getting real organic fiber—not just a greenwashed label. At My Green Mattress, all our cotton and wool are GOTS-certified.
2. GOLS – Global Organic Latex Standard
Latex mattresses (or latex hybrid mattresses) should be backed by GOLS certification if they claim to be organic.
What it means:
- The latex is at least 95% organically grown
- It’s harvested and processed in facilities that meet strict environmental and social standards
Why it matters: GOLS ensures your latex isn’t blended with synthetic fillers or petrochemical-based foam.
3. MADE SAFE®
This is one of the most consumer-forward certifications in the industry. MADE SAFE® screens products for thousands of known toxicants.
What it means:
- Free from flame retardants, VOCs, formaldehyde, phthalates, and other harmful chemicals
- Ingredients and materials are independently vetted for human and environmental safety
Why it matters: Even “natural” ingredients can be harmful. MADE SAFE® helps ensure your mattress is genuinely safe to sleep on.
When you see these third-party certifications—GOTS, GOLS, GREENGUARD Gold, and MADE SAFE®—in the mattress manufacturer’s name you can trust that your mattress meets the highest safety and environmental standards.
At My Green Mattress, we’re proud to build certified organic mattresses that meet all of these standards. No greenwashing. Just clean, comfortable sleep—backed by labels that matter.
